The first volume of an autobiography by this acclaimed Australian writer. It follows her life from her childhood in the remote rainforests of New Zealand through to the Depression years and her friendship with the author she was to marry, D'Arcy Niland. Park's novels include 'The Harp in the South', the Miles Franklin Award-winning 'Swords and Crowns and Rings', and children's novels including 'Playing Beatie Bow', winner of the 1981 Children's Book of the Year Award.
This is an enchanting book about growing up during the depression in New Zealand's rain forest. The authors father was in the lumber business and stationed with his family in the forest. Ruth grew up surrounded by interesting people, Maori friends, and nature. The book kept me engrossed during a 12 hour plane trip.. I was swept away to another time and place.
